Lionel Newman Conducting Fellowship
for young classical conductors
The Lionel Newman Conducting Fellowship awards a grant to support a conductor at the Aspen Music Festival and School in Aspen, Colorado. The award will support the residency of one guest conductor per year at the summer festival.
Established in 1991 in honor of Oscar-winning composer, pianist, and conductor Lionel Newman, the program pairs the world’s most talented young conductors with one of the premier orchestral training opportunities in the nation.
Founded in 1949, the Aspen Music Festival and School is regarded as one of the top classical music festivals in the United States, noted both for its concert programming and its musical training of mostly young-adult music students. The typical eight-week summer season includes more than 400 classical music events—including concerts by five orchestras, solo and chamber music performances, fully staged opera productions, master classes, lectures, and children’s programming—and brings in 100,000 audience members.
Lionel Newman was a prolific, versatile composer who began his career as Mae West’s piano accompanist before joining 20th Century Fox as a rehearsal pianist in 1943. Newman stayed with Fox for more than 40 years, working in various capacities on over 250 films. He wrote the score for Elvis Presley’s first film, Love Me Tender (1956), and won an Academy Award for the Barbara Streisand classic Hello, Dolly! (1969). The fund is derived from a generous gift from the Newman family.
