The BMI Foundation, Inc. recently celebrated the 2003 Jerry Harrington Awards at a reception at the BMI New York office. Winners were congratulated in recognition of Outstanding Creative Achievement in the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop.

Nine young composers, ranging in age from 19 to 26, have been named winners in the 51st Annual BMI Student Composer Awards. Frances W. Preston, BMI President and CEO, announced the decisions of the jury and presented the awards at a reception held June 13 at the Plaza Hotel in New York City

BMI Foundation President Ralph N. Jackson has announced that Ryan Amon and Jonathan Kupper are the winners of the 15th Annual Pete Carpenter Fellowship, a competition open to aspiring film and TV composers under the age of 35.

18 year old pianist John Austria (center) recently received the Milton Adolphus Award, given annually by the BMI Foundation to a student at LaGuardia High School who has demonstrated excellence in jazz performance.

The BMI Foundation is proud to announce the winners of the 3rd Annual Jerry Harrington Musical Theatre Awards in recognition of Outstanding Creative Achievement in the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop. Certificates and cash prizes were given out during a reception on June 17 at BMI’s New York office.

The BMI Foundation, Inc. recently awarded a Special Citation to Barry Jekowsky and the California Symphony for their “visionary and passionate support of Young American Composers.”

The BMI Foundation is proud to announce the winners of the 5th Annual John Lennon Scholarship Awards. The winners include Malone College student Michael Figueroa, who receives first place honors and a $10,000 scholarship for his piece “Take Me Away.”

BMI has announced that Ralph N. Jackson has been elected President of the BMI Foundation, Inc. He succeeds Theodora Zavin, who has been named President Emeritus of the Foundation effective November 1, 2001.

BMI proudly congratulates the honorees of the 12th Annual Pioneer Awards, presented by the Rhythm & Blues Foundation at a gala ceremony on November 8. Honorees included BMI legendary songwriters/artists Al Green, Big Jay McNeely, Dee Dee Sharp, Holland/Dozier/Holland, the Emotions, Louis Jordan and Allen Toussaint.

Theodora Zavin, Senior Vice President and Special Counsel to the President of BMI, has announced her retirement from the performing rights organization after nearly 50 years with BMI. She will leave her position, as well as her post as the President of the BMI Foundation, effective November 1, 2001.

Big band leader and composer Jamie Begian has been named the winner of the second annual BMI Foundation, Inc./Charlie Parker Jazz Composition Prize for his piece, “Fuzzy Math.” The $3000 award, given to the writer of the best new work composed in the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop, was presented during the Workshop’s annual Showcase Concert at Merkin Hall on July 19.
