BMI Honors Student Composers at 48th Annual Awards
Nine young composers, ranging in age from 19 to 25, have been named winners in the 48th Annual BMI Student Composer Awards. BMI President and CEO Frances W. Preston will present the awards at a reception to be held today at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Milton Babbitt, Chairman of the awards, and BMI’s Ralph N. Jackson, Director of the awards, will join in the presentations.

Lennon Scholarship Winners Feted
The BMI Foundation held a luncheon today in honor of the winners of the 2nd Annual John Lennon Scholarship. Established by Yoko Ono in conjunction with the Foundation and Gibson Musical Instruments, the first and second place winners were awarded $10,000 and $5,000, respectively, for Best Song with Original Music and Lyrics.

The BMI Foundation, Inc. has just kicked off the 3rd Annual John Lennon Scholarship open to 32 participating schools and youth orchestras chosen by the scholarship administrators. Established by Yoko Ono in conjunction with the Foundation and Gibson Musical Instruments, a first and second place winner will be awarded $10,000 and $5,000, respectively, for Best Song with Original Music and Lyrics.
Rob Middleton Receives BMI Foundation / Jerry Harrington Jazz Composers Award
Saxophonist, composer, teacher and Manhattan School of Music Masters candidate Rob Middleton was the recipient of the BMI Foundation/Jerry Harrington Jazz Composers Award, it was announced today by BMI, the performing rights organization that sponsors the award.
Laura Andel Wins First Annual BMI Foundation/Jerry Harrington Jazz Composers Award
The first BMI Foundation/Jerry Harrington Jazz Composers Award was presented recently to Argentine composer Laura Andel during the performing rights organization’s annual Jazz Composers Workshop showcase concert at Merkin Hall. Andel received $2,000 for her piece, “El Pire,” which was judged the best composition developed in the workshop during the past year.
