Porfirio “Popi” Piña

Popi has more than thirty years of experience as an executive in the Latin music industry. He currently serves as President and Executive Director of La Oreja Media Group, Inc., Songs of La Oreja Music Publishing Inc., La Oreja Media Foundation, Inc., Dominicana Music Week, LLC, and Techy Fatule manager.
He got his start in the music industry in 1989 as executive producer and manager of the first Merengue Hip-Hop group PROYECTO UNO. In 1995, together with his friend and partner Pavel de Jesus, founded Doble P Music, an artist’s management and music production company that played a key role in the music production, management, and marketing of ILEGALES (BMG US Latin); SANDY & PAPO MC; (Platano Records / Universal Music); JOSELITO (Musart / Balboa) and EL CHIPO (Rodven / PolyGram). Together with Pavel, they produced remixes, singles, and albums for Juan Luis Guerra, Los Hermanos Rosario, Ramon Orlando Valoy, Roy Tavare, Amparo Sandino, Checo Acosta, Estopa, Enrique Iglesias, Banda El Mexicano to name a few.
In the year 2000, he joined Chris Blackwell’s Palm Pictures, and in 2001 Felix Cabrera’s Latino Music a joint venture with Sony Music where he held the position of Director of Marketing, developed sales, marketing plans, and promotional strategies for Carlos Manuel y Su Clan, Fernando Villalona, Felix D'Oleo, Angelito Villalona, Ramon Orlando Valoy, Miriam Cruz, and Swing Divino respectively.
The artists, songwriters, and producers he has managed have received numerous RIAA certifications of Gold and Platinum Records in the United States,
Mexico, Central America, Venezuela, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, and Spain, recipients of numerous awards, such as Latin Billboard, Premio Lo Nuestro, Premios Juventud, Grammy, and Latin Grammy (United States States), Orquidea de Oro and Ronda (Venezuela), Gaviotas de Oro & Platino (Viñas del Mar, Chile), ACE (New York), Casandra and Soberano (Dominican Republic).
In 2005, after fifteen (15) years as a manager to artists, producers, and composers; he joined BMI as senior director, he established and maintained relationships with Latin artists, songwriters, and music publishers. He was responsible for signing Nicolas Tovar, Prince Royce, Don Omar, Jowell & Randy, Messiah, Plan B, Juan Magan, Wisin & Yandel, Sensato, Pitbull, Pavel Nuñez, Tainy, Nely El Arma Secreta, LunyTunes, Techy Fatule, Chael Produciendo to mention a few. While at BMI he managed the creative and administrative functions on the east coast of the United States, the Caribbean, and Latin America. He was responsible for coordinating and participating in special conferences, exhibitions, and events both in the United States and internationally and co-planned the execution of the BMI Latino Awards gala during his eight years in that organization.
He served as President of the BMI Foundation and Director of the peermusic Latin Scholarship, a national competition for young Latino composers and music authors, he participated in the NALIP Board of Directors and was the Co-Chairman of the Latino committee for the Recording Academy NY Chapter (Grammy & Latin Grammy) and participated in various national and international music conferences such as SXSW, Latin Billboard, Bogotá Music Market, Latin Grammy in the Schools, MIDEM, BIME y Dominicana Music Week including speaking at Berklee College of Music, Monroe College, Brooklyn College, University of Miami School of Music, National University Pedro Henriquez Ureña, and Technological Institute of Santo Domingo.
Recognized by El Diario-La Prensa of New York with EL Awards in 2008, DTM Magazine with the Latino Trendsetter Awards in 2006, Latin Mixx Awards for his support and dedication to the growth of DJs Record Pools and The Recording Academy (Grammy) in 2008, and 2015 for his support of the initiatives for artists in education, advocacy, and services of the human rights.
Porfirio founded La Oreja Media Group, a company that has traveled a path of great achievements, such as Soberano Awards, Grammy, and Latin Grammy Awards, in addition to numerous RIAA Gold, Platinum, and Diamond certifications for sales and streaming in the United States, with his roster of artists such as Milly Quezada, Techy Fatule, Miriam Cruz, Manny Cruz, Badir, Ilegales, Zacarias Ferreira, Fernando Villalona, Pavel Nunez, David Kada, El Prodigio and Brasa, amongst many others who work actively with his team and has been recognized nationally and internationally in the music industry.
Songwriters under his publishing company Songs of La Oreja have received numerous NMPA certifications in the USA, in addition to being pioneers in the Dominican Republic for implementing the songwriting camps.
Popi, along with his music label, distribution, and publishing company, has been focused on making the Dominican Republic a music business hub and its music such as Bachata, Merengue, Salsa, Merengue Tipico, and Dembow a creative musical destination for artists, songwriters, producers, and music companies around the world to come to the island and collaborate with our creative music industry. #somosmusica
