The BMI Foundation has announced the opening of the 8th Annual John Lennon Scholarship competition for young songwriters. Established by Yoko Ono in 1997, the John Lennon Scholarships are made possible through generous donations from Ono with matching funds from Gibson Musical Instruments.

BMI Foundation Founder Theodora Zavin Dies at 82
BMI and the BMI Foundation mourn the passing of Theodora Zavin, one of the music industry’s most respected copyright attorneys, who served as a senior executive at BMI. Zavin died Monday (June 21) at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital after a brief illness.
52nd Annual BMI Student Composer Award Winners Announced

BMI Foundation Names 2004 Pete Carpenter Film Composing Fellows
Pete Carpenter Fellowship, a competition open to aspiring film and TV composers under the age of 35. The Fellowship was established by the BMI Foundation and Carpenter’s family, colleagues, and friends to honor the late composer whose credits include television themes and scores such as The A-Team, Magnum P.I., The Rockford Files, Hardcastle and McCormick, Hunter and Riptide.
BMI Foundation Announces 2004 Lennon Scholarships
BMI Foundation President Ralph N. Jackson has announced the winners of the 7th Annual John Lennon Scholarships, a program that recognizes the best and brightest young songwriters between the ages of 15 and 24. This year’s winners include 20-year-old University of Michigan student Andrew Horowitz, who received 1st Place honors and a $10,000 scholarship for his song “Goodday.”

BMI Foundation Announces peermusic Latin Scholarship
Ralph N. Jackson, President of the BMI Foundation, Inc., and Ralph Peer II, Chairman and CEO of peermusic, announced today the establishment of the peermusic Latin Scholarship for young songwriters and composers. Funded through the generosity of the peermusic companies, the new $5,000 scholarship will be awarded annually through a competition for original Latin songs and instrumental compositions.
52nd Annual BMI Student Composer Awards Competition Opens
The 52nd annual BMI Student Composer Award competition will award $20,000 to young composers, it was announced by BMI President and CEO, Frances W. Preston.

BMI has partnered with SupportMusic.com in a new initiative in BMI’s array of efforts to support music education and school music programs. Jon Schapiro Wins BMI Foundation’s Charlie Parker Jazz Prize
The BMI Foundation has named jazz composer Jon Schapiro the winner of the 4th Annual Charlie Parker Jazz Prize for his work, “A Bounce in Her Step.” The $3,000 award, given to the writer of the best new work composed in the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop, was presented during the Workshop’s annual showcase concert at Merkin Hall on July 17.
BMI Foundation Welcomes Lennon Scholarship Winner
Stacy Allyn Baker (center), who won second place in the recent John Lennon Scholarship program, was welcomed in the BMI New York office. Baker is a Berklee College of Music student and took home a $2,500 scholarship for her song, “Too Late For Love Songs.”
