Adam Mathias and Brad Alexander win BMI Foundation’s Jerry Bock Award
The BMI Foundation, Inc. presented the 2007 Jerry Bock Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre to lyricist Adam Mathias and composer Brad Alexander August 7 at a luncheon held at the BMI offices. Mathias and Alexander received cash awards as well as commemorative plaques for their musical See Rock City.
Kirsten Volness Wins BMI Foundation’s 2nd Annual Women’s Music Commission
Kirsten Volness has been named the winner of the BMI Foundation’s 2nd Annual Women’s Music Commission and will receive $5,000 to create a new work to be premiered by the Colorado Quartet at Symphony Space in New York City in May, 2008.

Eleven young classical composers ranging in age from 15 to 25 have been named winners in the 55th Annual BMI Student Composer Awards. BMI President and CEO Del R. Bryant announced the decisions of the jury and presented the awards at a reception held May 21 at the Jumeirah Essex House Hotel in New York City.

Emily Shackelton, a 21-year-old Berklee College of Music student, has won first place and a $10,000 scholarship for her song, “Goodbye,” in the 10th Annual John Lennon Scholarship competition.

First Women’s Music Commission Awarded to Asha Srinivasan
Ralph N. Jackson, President of the BMI Foundation, Inc., has announced that Asha Srinivasan is the recipient of the first Women’s Music Commission. The award, which is given in cooperation with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s (OSL), includes a $5,000 commission to create a new chamber music work to be premiered at OSL’s “Notable Women: A Celebration of Women Composers” in June 2007.
BMI Foundation Announces Carlos Surinach Award Winners
Ralph N. Jackson, President of the BMI Foundation, Inc., has announced that bassoonist Peter Kolkay is the recipient of the Carlos Surinach Prize, given to an emerging artist in recognition of “outstanding service to American music,” and that composer Judah E. Adashi is the winner of the Carlos Surinach Commission.
2007 Student Composer Awards Competition Opens
The 55th annual BMI Student Composer Awards competition will award $20,000 to young composers, it was announced today by BMI President and CEO Del Bryant and BMI Foundation President Ralph N. Jackson. The postmark deadline for entering the 2007 competition, which is co-sponsored by BMI and the BMI Foundation, is Saturday, February 3, 2007.
Millikin University Student Receives Foundation’s First Robert Sherman Scholarship
The BMI Foundation has announced the winner of its inaugural Robert Sherman Scholarship, awarded to Millikin University student Andrew James (Drew) Nellessen. The new $1,000 scholarship, endowed by Mary Poppins composer Robert Sherman and administered through the BMI Foundation, will be given each year to a talented student composer studying musical theatre.

The BMI Foundation, Inc. is proud to announce the opening of the 4th Annual peermusic Latin Scholarship, a competition for young songwriters and composers.
